Meet Spookie Asem: The Duo Making Zany Mash-Ups

When we stumbled upon the @spookie.asem Instagram account, we were hella intrigued by the lovingly assembled visual buffet before us. We knew we had to learn more about the makers behind the magic. So we did.

It turns out that the duo behind the dreamy ensembles are long-distance friends, Danii and Mich. They met at varsity when Danii (who was studying Industrial Design) needed some help making a mould of a skull, and tapped into Mich’s super savvy skillset (as she was studying Fine & Applied Art at the time.) Unbeknownst to them, a colourful friendship/creative-collab mash-up was about to ensue and (ta-da!) the pair’s collaborative digi-collage journey began in October 2017.

By then, Mich had moved to Cape Town while Danii remained in Johannesburg, so their shared Instagram page became an awesome way of bridging their (a)cross-country friendship. “Our biggest inspiration would be our own feelings and experiences of the world. We call what we do ‘doodling’ because we do it during the day to process feelings or situations.” All of their collages are made using only their smartphones, so the works are sometimes blurry or low res. “We’ve embraced this as a part of our aesthetic,” they explain. And we’re so into it.

We explored the brilliant world of Danii & Mich, through a language they’re fluent in – pictures, of course. They were kind enough to share a few little nuggets about themselves and their creative process, but instead of telling us the answers, they showed us. Take a peek.
