Picks of the week

Jetson Belle: I Will Be With You

Introducing Jetson Belle, hailing from Pretoria and gracing us with a sweet indie electro-pop track in the form of his debut single ‘I Will Be With You’. Apparently an EP will be released early next year, where he will be collaborating with names like Matthieu Auriacombe (Beach Party and Hello Beautiful) as well as Peach van Pletzen (Bittereinder). This song is smooth and easy to listen to with its hypnotic basslines and spacey electronic movement, accompanied by falsetto vocals and generally echoing ambience. It definitely makes us excited for future tracks and collaborations.

Al Bairre: Let’s Fall In Love Some More

Get ready for some colourful, glittery happiness bottled into one jovial singalong. ‘Let’s Fall In Love Some More’ is the latest music video from Al Bairre’s first official mini LP called ‘Experience the Al Bairre Show with Al Bairre Experience’. This LP includes some more energetic and delightful tracks as well as some of their old hits. They are definitely one of the most beloved indie pop bands in the country without even having a full album, which is something to boast about. So let’s get our gear ready to be Al Bairrified. You will need: a tie-dye shirt, bananas, stickers for your face, colour bombs, a scenic beach background, glitter, and if possible, a set of twins.

DJ Speedsta Ft Moozlie: Don’t Panic

This slick and compelling beat is what you get when DJ Speedsta collaborates with Moozlie, better known as Skhanda Queen, on his new single ‘Don’t Panic’. Tlhonepho Thobejane, Silo Sithole and Thokozani Khoza directed the video and it features scenic views of Cape Town in the background and beautiful outfits inspired by the likes of Brenda Fassie and Lebo Mathosa. But most importantly, it has a dance-worthy beat and combines traditional African elements with contemporary pop culture.

Mother City Sketch TV: Power Games

Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes at the Load Shedding department? Mother City Sketch TV’s imagining of this is ingenious and hilarious. They are Cape Town’s very own comedy sketch crew, which consists of a wolf pack of creative performers bringing you original, witty sketch comedy that’ll get you LOL’ing.
Oh no Speedy!

Jarbas Agnelli: Ranch Beats

This masterpiece called ‘Ranch’ was created by Jarbas Agnelli who walked around his ranch, looking for everything that makes interesting noises. I’d still think this was a great song even without knowing how it was composed. Agnelli says that the composition only came during the editing stage, very organically. I think it’s the epitome of musical genius when you can make use of the elements around you without necessarily having the access to expensive instruments or equipment. Although this song had some digital editing involved, I definitely think that anyone with a passion for music and creating sounds would feel inspired by this piece.

Akron Fly: Dangerous

Damn. This beat is infectious. Arkon Fly, the multi-instrumentalists based in London, takes us back to the 70s golden age of funk in an extremely groovy way with ‘Dangerous’. Their distinct brand of soul-washed electronic house is like heroin for your dancing feet. Another incredibly catchy song is ‘Through the Fire’, which you should listen to right away.
